The
Met Office has issued an Amber extreme heat warning for parts of southern and
eastern England and South Wales. The alert, which applies on
Monday
and Tuesday, warns of temperatures of up to 35°.
High
pressure will drive up temperatures in southern Europe this weekend, too.
Paris
could reach a high of 39° C on Monday. And in Florence, a heat alert is [music]
due to rise to red today with
temperatures
expected to reach up to 38° C. Our correspondent Guy Hedgeko is in Madrid for
us in as Spain is bracing for
sits
first major heat wave of the summer with warm air gusts from Africa taking the
country potentially to temperatures as high as 45° C from Monday.
We've
already had a heat wave uh here in Europe back in May, but this is the first
heat wave of the summer certainly
uh
here in Spain. Um and we're also going to be seeing very high temperatures in neighbouring
Portugal. uh in France um around half the population
is
on uh a high uh high temperature alert and then we're also seeing going to be
seeing temperatures uh up in the
the
high30s um possibly in Italy and also high temperatures even in Germany. So,
it's really across uh much of Europe, we're
going
to be seeing uh the very high uncomfortable temperatures. And here in Spain,
the highest uh we're expecting will be around 42 degrees this weekend.
As
usual, that's down in the south of the country, the Guadal Kir Valley. But, uh
something which is very unusual is we're going to be seeing temperatures of
around
40° up in the Bas country, up in the north this weekend. That's normally one of
the coolest regions of Spain and
yet
it's going to be seeing those extremely high temperatures.
Yeah,
the temperatures across Europe 10 to 15 um degrees um higher than a above
average for mid June. Um we always
talk
here in in London about how the UK is not very good at dealing with heat
particularly in the cities. What is it that they do better perhaps apart from
the
obvious the siesta in Spain? But just talk us through how they deal with it.
Well,
I mean what we always get every year with uh heatwave is the authorities issue
advice which is yeah, you make sure you're hydrated, make sure that
high-risk
groups which are the elderly, small children and people with underlying health
conditions are out of the heat during the hottest time of the
day.
Here in Spain that tends to be in the mid to late afternoon between 5 and
7
uh in the evening normally. Um but also, we've been seeing some quite new
initiatives as well as we've been
seeing
temperatures creep up in recent years uh during these heat waves. Uh so for
example uh this year we've got these
so-called
uh heat shelters in many towns and cities across the country. Now these are
public spaces or public buildings
like
libraries or sports halls where which are around conditioned and people can go
in and just sit down have a drink of water until the worst of the heat has
passed. GKO for us there in Madrid.
